This afternoon, we have a big announcement for you. And we are happy to announce, that we have integrated SSL into the servers for our website. If you are wondering what SSL means, we will be happy to take you through the basics, and what the implications of this move are to you.
What is SSL?
SSL is an acronym which simply stands for Secure Sockets Layer. In simple terms, whenever we browse a website, our browser (whether on the desktop, laptop or mobile) connects with a server, and provides information for you to read. This connection happens through a socket.
What a secure connection basically does is, encrypts the data that is exchanged between your browser and the server. This means, that once an SSL connection is in place, the data you exchange between the server and your device cannot be intercepted and read by anyone else in between.
You might have noticed, many websites offer you a “lock” icon, and change the connection protocol from “http” to “https” when you click on their link. In the address bar itself, they provide you with an SSL certificate that guarantees your connection with the website is secure.
The reason this is important is because when you send information on the internet, it is passed from computer to computer before it reaches the destination computer or server. Any computer between you and the server can access your user information, passwords and credit card information if the connection is not encrypted with an SSL certificate.
How do things change for you?
There is no action required from your side. We want to basically communicate, that starting today, whenever you access our website, the information you are reading and providing is now being transferred over a secure connection. Each time you will visit our websites, or any part thereof, you’ll be sure to see a little lock in the address bar, that tells you, you are safe.
There is a great positive impact however. And we will list out a few points below.
WordPress has announced they are heading towards SSL
On December 1st, WordPress announced they will be moving to SSL in 2017. Which can be a hurdle for most bloggers using WordPress, because they will need to handle the complexities around implementing SSL on their self-hosted servers. Basically, SSL is the future for all credible websites.
If you are unaware, recently we launched a great new platform for bloggers, and we are working with them to deliver more and exciting products in the coming days. Since WordPress is one of our preferred platforms for blogging, this is important to us.
Better search ranking results
Google has been hinting to give greater preference to websites using SSL certificates in their search ranking results for some time now. What it means is, they are going to give more weightage to websites that are secure and offer greater trust to their users.
While we are in the process of marketing, our newly launched product at Blogtrumpet aims to provide visibility for content creators, and naturally if we are hosting our content through SSL, it means better visibility for our content providers and greater trust for visitors to our website. The benefit is actually multi-fold in terms of the traffic and business we are looking to generate.
More features
This move changes the foundation of how we are offering services through our platforms. We have also implemented a cloud-hosted content-delivery network to our servers in the process which will increase the speed and scale of services we can offer you. Which means, you will not only be accessing information faster and more-reliably, a lot more users can access the website simultaneously.
We have been looking at feature requests, that may need us to capture and provide you with more personal information regarding your advertising plans, what you can do on our website, or understanding your tastes and preferences better – we will be able to do all of this and much more, once our servers are secure.
One of the major hassles we faced while scaling up to more users was the threat and vulnerability of our website to attacks. We are happy to share, that with SSL being implemented, such threat will drastically reduce, which will help us focus more on providing you with great content, improved solutions and an incredible experience.
We are happy to have you with us, as part of the subscribers to our products and services, and welcome you aboard this new journey towards our destination.
Welcome in the #DigitalTwist !
